Social Change drives the work of JWIC
JIWC identifies issues that affect women and their famlies, becomes educated about those issues and advocates on their behalf.
Membership in several coalitions enhances this important work.
The Coalition for Gun Control www.guncontrol.ca was formed to reduce gun death, injury and crime. Statistics show that between 1993 and 2002, almost one-third of female spousal victims were killed as a result of shooting. As in other types of homicide, the use of firearms has been decreasing in the recent past, due in part to the work of the coalition.
Campaign 2000: End Child Poverty in Canada www.campaign2000.ca is driven by the November 1989 House of Commons unanimous all party resolution: ‘The House seeks to achieve the goal of eliminating poverty among children by the year 2000.’ Today 1 in 6, or 1,071,000 children still lives in poverty in Canada.
The Coalition of Jewish Women for the Get has successfully lobbied for changes to legislation to the Divorce Act to include the granting of a Get prior to a civil divorce.
Jewish women seeking help in regard to Get issues are invited to call JWIC toll free at 1-866-333-5942 for referral information.
