


Violence Against Women
…In Relationships … is a complex issue.
Abusive behaviour includes sexual, psychological, verbal, physical and financial abuse.
JWIC takes pride in its groundbreaking work in addressing the issue of relationship violence against
women in the Jewish community. JWIC has developed educational materials, sponsored public forums,
implemented culturally sensitive housing for abused Jewish women & their children and provided
resources to clergy and social workers.
Protect Yourself, Stop the Violence Against You is a JWIC publication that is a hands-on guide to help a woman who is in an abusive situation. It is available free of charge and is printed in English, French, Hebrew, Russian and Spanish.
Speaker's Bureau
A speaker's bureau made up of survivors and professionals is being launched in the Toronto area. The goal is to educate the community about the issue and its impact. If you are a survivor, or want to book a program, call 416-630-9313.
Billboard Campaigns
Spring 2006 brought a bold message to the Toronto Jewish community. A campaign to create awareness about the issue of Domestic Abuse in the Jewish community was launched in the form of billboards on the Bathurst corridor.
Task Force on Violence in Health Care
Initiated in Vancouver, the work of this JWIC led Task Force will serve as a model for other provinces in Canada.
Needs Assessment
JWIC is currently partnering with JF & CS of Toronto and U of T School of Social Work to do cutting edge research to gather the statistics for Domestic Abuse in the Jewish community that will in turn inform service needs, educational requirements and program development.
Healthy Relationships Programming – Coming Soon
Programming designed to teach youngsters grades 6-8 to gain an understanding of healthy relationships. Topics include self-esteem, understanding of gender roles, components of friendships and dating relationships, dynamic of abusive relationships.
When Push Comes to Shove... It's No Longer Love
Youth programming to address dating violence. One out of every three teens experience some form of
abuse in their romantic relationships, including physical, verbal and emotional abuse. Jewish teens
are no exception. Such an alarming statistic confirms the importance of early education, prevention
and intervention targeted at teens and young adults.
Sexual Assault Awareness Campaign

ASTEH – Alternative Short Term Emergency Housing for Abused Jewish Women and their Children
This award-winning project is cosponsored by JWIC and local social service agencies. It is a community based
housing facility that provides an abused woman and her family with a secure environment in which life
decisions can be safely explored.
Residential Treatment Centre in Israel (RTC)
The JWI RTC began as a haven for the ‘Teheran Children’, a group of Jewish children who escaped the Nazis by
journeying from Poland through Iran and India to Palestine. What started as a home for 20 children of the
Holocaust has grown into a world- renowned treatment center for Israel’s most troubled youth.
Action & Advocacy
JWIC is committed to identifying, educating and advocating on issues that affect women and children. JWIC is
an active member of the Coalition for Gun Control, the Coalition of Jewish Women for the Get, Campaign
2000, a campaign to end child poverty in Canada.
